"Don't forget the turnip this Halloween" says English Heritage
Amid fears of a pumpkin shortage this Halloween, English Heritage is calling on people to rediscover the original carved decoration, the humble turnip and the original 'roots of Halloween. By way of inspiration, English Heritage has installed a number of ghoulishly carved turnips at Dover Castle as part of its week of half-term Halloween events taking place across the country this October.

Wish You Were Here? Postcard Sending is in Terminal Decline
The humble postcard – a communication staple for over 150 years – is at risk, English Heritage warned today (10 July) as new research commissioned by the charity reveals that only 8% of adults send a postcard once a year and 52% never send them at all. In a bid to revive the once popular British holiday tradition and inspire children to take up postcard-writing, English Heritage has commissioned three limited edition postcards, designed by children’s illustrators Nick Sharratt and Sir Quentin Blake, which will be available to collect for free at eighteen historic sites as part of their Great British Summer events.

Ahoy! English Heritage recruits its first female pirate
A female pirate will take to the rigging at English Heritage properties for the first time this summer, the charity announced today (Tuesday 19 July 2022). Sword fighting 18-year-old Freyja Eagling will be the first woman to pick up a pistol and choose a life of piracy with English Heritage. Starting at Pendennis Castle in Cornwall on Tuesday 26 July, Freyja will also visit Dover Castle in Kent and Scarborough Castle in North Yorkshire as part of English Heritage’s new series of summer events, Pirates!

Kenilworth Castle rebuilt in Minecraft after standing in ruins for over 300 years
Kenilworth Castle – one of England’s greatest fortresses – has been rebuilt for the first time in Minecraft, the popular online block-building game, English Heritage has revealed today (14 August). The charity is running Minecraft workshops at a number of its castles this summer so that visitors can build some of England’s most famous castles in the shadow of the real thing.
