Hadrian's Wall

Birdoswald, Corbridge, Chesters and Housesteads Roman fort are currently closed but we hope to reopen on 3 December for pre-booked visits. From Thursday 5 November until Wednesday 2 December we will be keeping a selection of our sites open for local visitors and Members. These sites all have large outdoor spaces, and they can be opened in a way that protects the health of all our visitors, staff and volunteers. We have additional safety measures in place at all of our sites including social distancing, enhanced cleaning and limits on visitor numbers. You will need to book in advance in order to visit, and we ask everyone to please bear in mind the government’s latest advice on essential journeys before you plan your visit. We hope to resume our normal winter opening times from 3 December, and will update you when we have more news. If you have a booking for while we are closed you will be automatically refunded within 10 working days.

Welcome to Hadrian's Wall

Our four Roman forts are open and operating under Tier 2 and 3 restrictions.

Although things might be a little different when you visit, you’ll still be able to enjoy exploring the places where history really happened. And you’ll still be given a warm and safe welcome by our friendly – if socially distant – staff and volunteers.

  • Housesteads Roman Fort - Hadrian's Wall

    A fascinating tourist attraction in North East England, Housesteads is the most complete Roman fort in Britain. Set where Hadrian's Wall climbs to the top of a dramatic escarpment.

  • Corbridge Roman Town

    Visitors to Corbridge can walk along the main street of this Roman garrison town, flanked by the remains of granaries, a fountain house, markets, workshops and temples.

  • Chesters Roman fort

    Built almost 2000 years ago to house a Roman army garrison guarding the nearby bridge across the River Tyne, Chesters Roman Fort is one of the most impressive visitor attractions in the North East.

  • Birdoswald Roman fort

    Birdoswald Roman Fort is the perfect place to stop off on a family day out or if you're walking or cycling along Hadrian's Wall in Cumbria. Extensive remains of the Roman Fort can be explored.
