Many of you took the chance to get out and about in December with frosty walks,  coastal adventures and indoor escapes to England’s historic houses and palaces.

Lots of you shared your photos with us on social media using the hashtag #englishheritage, and we’ve picked out a few of our favourites to share here.

Sem admires the bookshelves at Wrest Park

Sem (@awesemtravels) shared this photo of the ornate bookshelves in Wrest Park’s library. The room was a favourite of the resident de Grey family, with its floor-to-ceiling windows and elegant gilded plasterwork.

Andy explores snowy Stokesay

This beautiful winter scene was captured by Andy Chadd (@andy_c_photos) at Stokesay Castle in rural Shropshire. Stokesay is the finest and best-preserved fortified medieval manor house in England, offering a glimpse into 700 years of history.

Kacie and family scale Tintagel

Kacie (@withlovekacie) and her family “climbed and hiked and walked and meandered and then hiked and climbed some more” when they visited Tintagel Castle on the rugged Cornish coast last month. The ruin of an ancient fortress sits on a dramatic island steeped in Arthurian legend, with spectacular views across the open ocean.

Rievaulx Abbey, Shannon’s “hidden gem”

“Love a hidden gem.” Thanks to Shannon (@forloveandleisure) for sharing this stunning photo of Rievaulx Abbey in the winter sunshine. The ruins of one of England’s most powerful Cistercian monasteries are situated in a secluded valley of the North Yorks Moors. The museum and visitor centre offer an insight into medieval monastic life.
