Beneath the Yorkshire village of Aldborough lies Isurium Brigantum, capital of the Romanised Brigantes, the biggest tribal confederation in Roman Britain. Excavations have shown that in Roman times, Isurium had a prosperous population living in considerable luxury.
Remains of Aldborough Roman Town’s defences are laid out in a lovely Victorian arboretum garden with gorgeous trees, including towering conifers.
You can see two fine mosaic floors inside period buildings, and the museum houses an outstanding collection of Roman finds, including important recent discoveries.
You can visit Aldborough Roman Site on a guided tour on selected days.
