Audley End House and Gardens

The grounds, service wing and stable yard at Audley End are now open for you to visit. You now need to book your timed tickets in advance. We have introduced limits on visitor numbers to help keep everyone safe, and you won’t be able to visit without your booking confirmation. If you’re a Member, your ticket will be free, but you still need to book in advance. There are other new steps in place to ensure everyone’s safety, so your visit will be a little different.

Although things might be a little different when you visit, you’ll still be able to enjoy exploring the places where history really happened. And you’ll still be given a warm and safe welcome by our friendly – if socially distant – staff and volunteers.

  • Gardens - Our blooming gardens are open for you to enjoy while keeping to social distancing rules.
  • Service Wing - The Service Wing will be open with social distancing in place.
  • House - The House will remain closed for now. On weekends from 18 July we will be bring the story of the house and Service Wing to life with live interpretation in the open air. Find out more below.
  • Cafe - The Cartyard cafe is open for takeaways light refreshments  such as hot and cold drinks, wrapped cakes and ice-creams with a new one-way system in place. Our pre-booked afternoon teas will be unavailable during this time.
  • Shop -  The shop will be temporarily relocated to the Visitor Information Centre with a new one-way system.
  • Playground - The playground is closed until further notice. 
  • Toilets - Toilets will be open across the site at the Cartyard, laundry room and portaloos by the entrance. Additional hand sanitising stations will be available across the site. 
  • Dogs - Dogs on leads are welcome to enjoy our grounds.

Summer Fun at Audley End

On weekends from 18 July we will be bring the story of the House and Service Wing to life with live interpretation in the open air. Meet the servants as they step out of their stuffy rooms and into the clean fresh air while the Lord and Lady of the house are away on holiday. Meet Mrs Crocombe the Cook and Mrs Warwick the Housekeeper and then discover Mr Vert the head gardener busily tending to his Lordship’s garden and John Barker the Groom spending time with his beloved horses in the stables.

Admire the interiors of what was once one of the largest and most opulent houses in Jacobean England. Wander around our spacious grounds and admire the glorious gardens designed by Capability Brown, including our beautifully restored parterre and organic kitchen gardens. Take a stroll over to the stable yard and meet our friendly horses before topping up your energy with a delicious treat in the cafe.

Geoffrey de Mandeville, 1st Earl of Essex, founds a Benedictine priory at Walden, which becomes Walden Abbey in 1190.

1538From Abbey to Mansion

The abbey is suppressed by Henry VIII and granted to Sir Thomas Audley, Lord Chancellor. He transforms the abbey buildings into a mansion.
