Shared horizons at Housesteads Roman Fort

Housesteads Roman Fort is Britain’s most complete Roman fort, and has witnessed nearly two thousand years of history and change, from conquest and community to wildlife and landscape.

Built within a decade of AD 122, when work on the Wall began, it was garrisoned by an 800-strong infantry regiment until the end of the 4th century. Today, in spite of its awe-inspiring structure and history, much improvement is necessary.

Now, thanks to generous support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and other funders we’re bringing more of Housesteads’ stories to life through the Shared Horizons project. As part of the project, we’ll also be improving the facilities, and creating welcoming new spaces for visitors and local communities alike.
