World Builder Challenge trails

Activate your imagination to build new worlds with our World Builder Challenge trails at sites across the country. 

We have four trails for you to enjoy (city, forest, fort and legend) and we'll be swapping which ones are at which sites throughout the year. 

Whichever you do, the task is clear: search the site for trail markers which give you options for your world, then draw or write your choices in your booklet.

Since it all depends on how you make your choices, each time you visit, you will build something new. 

We give you the challenge. What you build is up to you.

Build your own ... city

Imagine you’re standing in an English city hundreds of years ago. What’s around you? A bustling market, bells ringing, a new church being built, the smell of animals...

This is the starting point of our city trail. Follow the markers and build your very own city. Be inspired by the past and let your imagination run wild as you create a whole new city for your people to live in.

Build your own ... forest

Throughout England’s history, people have always been connected to forests, whether they lived in a palace, castle, abbey or village. Forests provided timber for building houses and firewood to keep warm, while kings and queens hunted among the trees.

What will your forest look like? Which trees, flowers, bushes and plants will you have? What animals will call it home? Follow the trail and come up with your own answers.

From prehistoric earthworks to wooden Roman towers, from Anglo-Saxon strongholds to Norman castles, forts have played a huge role in English history. They’ve also been the centre of communities where people have lived, worked and played.

What would you build your fort out of? Wood perhaps? Or stone? Or marshmallows? Follow the trail and be inspired to create your own fort.
